The man who would be accountant...erm...king...erm
That's right peoples, our senate and lower house are now both controlled by the one and only John Howard. I'm afraid to leave and I'm afraid to stay. On the balance, however, I'd rather not be here to witness the dismantling of our public free education systems, independent television content, publicly owned telecommunications, and anything else worth having that doesn't make money in the short term.
It hurts to see that Australians have elected a parliament of accountants. However, the real pain comes from seeing anyone in full control of Australia's political and cultural direction. It would be (almost) as bad to see full control go to Labor.
Oh well, hopefully during my year away in Japan there will be some sort of constitutional crisis, and I'll return to an Australia which hasn't been completely culturally strip-mined by thugs in suits.
